Just a quick one today, because I’m out for the day spending time with some clients who Kev and I are doing a quarterly strategy day with.
Seeing clients face-to-face is one of my favourite things to do.
I spend a lot of time on video calls, which is also important because it means I can see more clients on a weekly basis, but nothing quite compares to being in a room with them.
Recently, a new client told me the way Kev and I work with clients is nothing like they expected it to be.
I think they were expecting it to be lots of spreadsheets and sales projections and “bizznizzy” stuff.
Of course, all that sort of thing has its place, but it always comes secondary to human aspects such as developing strong relationships within your team, developing a good, positive mindset towards your work, putting effort in to make sure you’re always working with the right clients or customers who value you do and respect your time, and fostering good self-care that will give you the energy you need to sustain a strong business whilst still having enough in your tank at the end of the working day to enjoy your home life and not just flake out on the sofa dreading the grind of your work the next day.
Our work is always about people first.
And that’s why, regardless of whether you run your own business or you’re employed, you need to think about people first, too.
It’s vital to think of looking after yourself well, and developing strong relationships with the people in your world, both at home and at work.
That’s because it’s rarely the actual nuts and bolts of doing your job that will cause you headaches and sleepless nights.
It’s dealing with conflict between team members, pacifying a client who’s having a tantrum, getting a supplier who’s dicking you around to play ball, dealing with “all you think about is work” comments from your spouse and kids (which can be hard when you know you’re busting your arse for them), and watching your mental and physical health go down the swanny because it feels like you don’t have the time or energy to prepare healthy meals and exercise.
My job isn’t to sit you in front of graphs and wave my laser pen over your sales margin uplifts.
My job is to help you see the big picture, and to help you explore the space between your ears that will ultimately have more effect on your business than any other strategy, process or equipment changes you make at work.

From that, you might decide to get in a room with us and see where the real magic happens!
