The other day, I drove 45 minutes to make a Zoom call.
Don’t worry—I haven’t completely lost the plot. The electricity board was doing maintenance work, and our power was off between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
It was a real bugger because I’ve been asked to make a presentation to a group of recruitment consultants, but thankfully I was able to borrow one of my children’s houses to work from.
I could’ve just hot-spotted to my phone and hoped for the best, but I don’t trust that my devices will stay connected and powered up long enough to enable me to present successfully, so I’m doing my best to cover all bases.
It reminds me of something important about motivation: We will often do more for other people than we will for ourselves.
If I hadn’t had a presentation that day, I would’ve been tempted to grab my Kindle and spend the day on the sofa because I was just getting over a pretty bad cold that had zapped my energy.
I certainly wouldn’t have hauled my arse over the countryside just to get a good WiFi connection. I would probably have used the power outage and not feeling 100% as a convenient excuse to do very little that day!
However, I made a commitment to someone else, and I intended to honour it, especially as the topic of the talk was how to get out of your own way and do what you said you would!
Are you using excuses to justify not doing what you said you would?
Isn’t it weird how it feels OK to let ourselves down privately, but you wouldn’t let someone else down?
Take some time to check in today and notice where you could be treating yourself with as much importance and respect as you would others.
Yes! I’m talking to you if you keep putting off exercise because you don’t have time!
Or, if you promised yourself you would prepare healthy lunches instead of buying fast food, then you can’t be arsed to do it.
The path of least resistance is always appealing but doesn’t always take you in the right direction.
