What age would you choose for your own avatar?
Kev and I recently went to see Abba Voyage.
If you’re not familiar with the show, it’s a concert of their greatest hits performed through some really clever tech including what many people refer to as holograms, but are actually 3D avatars made of the band whilst they were in their heyday in 1979, viewed on a 2D screen.
The show was absolutely incredible.
I’ve never been a big Abba fan, in fact my 12-year-old self would be completely disgusted with me for paying money to see one of their pitifully uncool concerts, but my current self is in awe of the way they’re part of some proper cutting-edge tech whilst in their 70’s, and I must admit they churned out some real bangers in their time that I can fully appreciate now.
I didn’t expect to be quite so mentally fooled by the “Abbatars”.
I knew Agnetha, Frida, Benny and Bjorn couldn’t really be in the room with us, but there they were!
I clapped after every song, even though I knew it was basically the same as clapping at the end of a YouTube video.
My brain was telling me two things at once, and I switched repeatedly from total absorption in the experience to marvelling at the process that made it possible.
Of course, my busy brain wasn’t content with just watching the show.
I was exploring all kinds of tangential thoughts whilst watching the sea of middle-aged birds just like me shaking their bosoms to the beat.
I asked myself the question that if I was to choose a time in my life to strike my Vickitar, what age would I choose?
When was my heyday?
I’m very pleased to say I’d be happy to strike my Vickitar right now.
I don’t look back on any period of my life and think “That was when I peaked”.
I’m not sure if there even is a peak as such.
What I’ve lost in some areas I have gained in others. Not necessarily better - just different.
I’m still making the most of every day, looking after my health, challenging myself at work, putting energy into the people around me, and being as creative as I can.
It made me feel really grateful that I still feel the way I do, and I’m not wistfully looking back at life and remembering what things used to be in the “good old days”.
That’s how I intend on staying - in a permanent state of evolution that isn’t fighting against the passage of time, but honouring what came before and being excited about what lies ahead.
How about you?
Do you feel as if you need a bit of help getting excited about what comes next?
